Saju Calculator (Korean Four Pillars of Destiny)

Saju (사주, 'four pillars') is the Korean form of the Four Pillars of Destiny. Your year, month, day and hour of birth each become a pair of characters (a heavenly stem and an earthly branch), eight in total. This calculator builds your chart from solar term times, then explains your Day Master, the balance of the Five Elements, your Ten Gods, and how your luck changes every 10 years and every year.

When does the day change?

The Ja hour (11 PM to 1 AM) straddles midnight, so there are two ways to date someone born between 11 PM and midnight.

  • 11 PM: The day changes at 11 PM, so the Day pillar is taken from the next day.
  • Midnight (late Ja hour): Until midnight it stays your birth date; only the Hour pillar is set to the Ja hour.

If you weren't born in this window, both options give the same result. With a place of birth chosen, the longitude-corrected time is used, so in Seoul it applies to clock times from about 11:30 PM to 12:30 AM.

Times are treated as Korean local time (with Korea's historical daylight saving and time zones applied). If you were born outside Korea, convert your birth time to Korean time first and choose 'No correction', or pick the city closest in longitude.

Your reading

Byeong Fire (丙火) Day Master · the sun in the sky

Like the sun, you brighten any room. Honest, passionate and expressive, you stand out easily and find joy in sharing openly.

PassionHonestyExpressivenessOptimism

Watch out for this. Like a fire that blazes and dies down quickly, you may start hot and finish weak. Pace yourself and you'll shine longer.

Balance of the Five Elements

Strong Fire (passion, expression, courtesy) · 3
Strong Fire makes you passionate and expressive. Emotions heat up quickly and you can be impatient, so take a breath before deciding.

Roots and revealed energy (hidden stems)

Rooted in · Month branch, Day branch
An element matching your Day Master sits inside the branches (hidden stems), so your Day Master has roots. Like a tree rooted in the ground, you aren't easily shaken and can hold up on your own in hard times.

Revealed · 乙(Year stem), 丙(Day stem), 壬(Hour stem)
These hidden energies inside the branches also appear in the stems. Your inner self and outward appearance match, so that energy works powerfully in real life.

Combinations and clashes

  • 乙辛 stem clash · Year stem (ancestors, childhood) – Month stem (parents, siblings, work)
Thoughts and directions collide head-on. Disagreements or sudden changes come easily, but it can also break what has hardened and open a new path.
  • 亥巳 branch clash · Year branch (ancestors, childhood) – Month branch (parents, siblings, work)
A head-on clash. Changes like moving or changing jobs, or quarrels and partings, come easily, but it also keeps you moving instead of stagnating.
  • 辛丙 stem combination (Water) · Month stem (parents, siblings, work) – Day stem (yourself)
They attract each other and combine into Water. The two positions grow close and cooperate easily, but each may lose some of its own strength.
  • 丙壬 stem clash · Day stem (yourself) – Hour stem (children, later life)
Thoughts and directions collide head-on. Disagreements or sudden changes come easily, but it can also break what has hardened and open a new path.

Symbolic stars (Sinsal)

  • Heavenly Noble lucky · Year branch (ancestors, childhood)
Considered the best of the lucky stars. Helpers appear in hard times, and you have the strength to get through crises smoothly.
  • Traveling Horse mixed · Month branch (parents, siblings, work)
The star of movement and change. Business trips, travel, living abroad and moving come often, suiting trade, sales or transport, though settling in one place may be hard.
  • Kuigang Star mixed · Hour pillar (children, later life)
The star of strong energy and charisma. Bright with excellent leadership to run large organizations, but stubborn and prone to extremes.
  • Yang Blade unlucky · Day branch (spouse, home)
A sharp, strong energy like a blade. Excellent decisiveness and drive shine in the military, police, medicine or sports, but watch out for fights and injuries.
  • Resentment Star unlucky · Year branch (ancestors, childhood), Hour branch (children, later life)
A relationship of resentment without reason. Hurt feelings pile up easily between close people, so don't let emotions linger; resolve them as they come.

This reading explains the general meanings of the Day Master, Five Elements, Ten Gods, combinations and clashes, and symbolic stars. Rules for symbolic stars vary slightly between schools, so results may differ from other calculators. Please treat it as entertainment and reference.

How the chart is calculated

The year and month pillars change at the 24 solar terms (the year at Ipchun, around February 4), not on January 1 or the 1st of the month, and are calculated from the exact solar term times. The day pillar follows the 60-day cycle, and the hour pillar uses two-hour periods. Korea's historical daylight saving time and UTC+8:30 periods are applied, and choosing a city corrects for longitude (Seoul is about 32 minutes behind Korea Standard Time).

Day Master and the Ten Gods

The stem of your day pillar, the Day Master, represents you. Every other character is read by its relationship to it: Companion (same element), Output (what you produce), Wealth (what you control), Power (what controls you) and Resource (what supports you), each in a yin and yang version, giving ten in total.

Decade and annual luck

Decade luck runs forward or backward from your month pillar depending on your sex and the yin or yang of your birth year, and its starting age is based on the time between your birth and the nearest solar term (3 days = 1 year). Annual luck follows each year's pillar, changing at Ipchun.

FAQ

I was born outside Korea. Can I still use it?

Yes. The calculator treats the time you enter as Korean local time, so convert your birth time to Korea Standard Time (UTC+9) first and choose 'No correction'. The chart is the same as long as the moment of birth is the same.

Is Saju the same as Chinese BaZi?

They share the same system of stems, branches and the Five Elements. This calculator uses Korean readings for the characters (for example Gap for 甲) and common Korean interpretations, so terms and emphasis may differ slightly from BaZi books.

What if I don't know my time of birth?

Check 'I don't know my time of birth' and the chart is calculated with three pillars, leaving out the hour pillar. Your Day Master, Five Elements and luck are still shown, but the start of decade luck may be off by a few months.

Solar term times and lunar conversion are calculated with lunar-javascript (MIT). Your birth date is never sent to a server or stored. The reading is for entertainment and reference only.
